Common Questions About SEO – Search Engine Optimization

How to Get Your Site to Show up in Google & Other Search Engines

Many of our clients ask us about getting their site ranked on the first page of Google. In 2019 this process is as complicated as it has ever been so it’s extremely important to know what to ask about the seo that is being done to your site. To start off, we’ll give some definitions for those of you who are completely new to the world of seo, after which you will read commonly asked questions about the topic.

What is SEO?

Our definition of search engine optimization is: The combination on page and off page efforts necessary to place, and to move a website up in search results for any number of keywords.

What is on page SEO?

On page SEO is the structuring of content on a website in such a way that search engines can find the information you wish to share and place it in search results. Some aspects of on page seo include keyword placement in headings, meta descriptions, titles, and images, as well as length and quality of content, feedback mechanisms, load speed, and content flow.

What are Keywords?

Keywords are the terms that potential clients will be using to find you in search engines.  For example, an individual looking for dog collars online might use the keywords “dog collars”, “best dog collars”, “collars for large dogs”.

What is Off Page SEO?

Off page SEO is the most important aspect of search engine optimization or getting your site placed in a good position in search results.  Off page SEO is a combination of backlinking, citations, social signals, and content sharing.

What are Backlinks?

Backlinks are simply a “link back” to your website.  Backlinks can be obtained in a number of ways including trading backlinks with another website, they can be purchased, or they can be obtained naturally when individuals wish to share information you provided on your site or on social media.

What do Backlinks do for SEO?

Search engines use “spiders” or “robots” to find statistics and information about websites so they can provide the best possible search results to individuals who are looking for information, products, or services.  When a search engine spider sees that a website has a large number of high-quality backlinks, the search engine assumes that the website is popular and has a large amount of credibility in it’s category

How long does it take to get a website on the first page of Google?

This is one of the most common questions we receive about search engine marketing and it is also one of the most complicated to answer.  In order to answer the question, one must look at competition – how many other reputable and established companies are ranking for the same keyword?  Secondly, one must determine what level of effort is being put into seo.  Higher budgets can create significant changes in search engine rankings quickly, while lower budgets may take much longer. With an average client, we can normally see large movement in ranking within 3 months.

How can I know that my site will not be penalized due to “black hat SEO” done to my site?

This is one of the most important questions to ask of your SEO company.  To be realistic, nearly all backlinking efforts could be considered black hat.  The real question is whether or not the backlinks are being obtained in an ethical and natural manner, and also in such a way that they will not be penalized by future Google updates.  A couple of important questions to ask are:  Are the links being placed on high quality, relevant sites, inside of relevant content?  Does the SEO firm have complete control over the backlinks should they become undesirable?  Can the SEO firm show you positive results from the backlinks.

What keywords do I optimize for?

Search engine optimization is all about competition, effort, and resources.  Back to the dog collar illustration, if my company sold just “dog collars” online, think about what companies I am competing with.  I’d be competing with pretty much every Wal-mart, Pets-mart, and the like right? Think about the resources these companies have for doing SEO and making sure their online presence is up to speed and up to the competition.  These companies have whole departments and contracted agencies for the purpose of finding business online.  What can you do to compete with these big guys in business?  Is it hopeless and you should just close up shop? Absolutely not!  What you really need to do is do a little research on what sorts of keywords people are searching for related to dog collars – Google Keyword Planner is a great resource.
